There are many practical applications for the right game. A number of educators use skill games, and puzzle games as a teaching tool to illustrate concepts and skills that are difficult to convey, given the short attention spans of many youngsters. Often, such as with children with developmental disabilities, fun games offer a unique way to capture and hold attention while sneaking in an exercise in hand-eye coordination, simple memorization, math, reaction time, shape and face recognition and other skills. Many therapists and Qualified Mental Retardation Professionals (QMRPs) have discovered that in some instances in which person-to-person teaching has failed, an entertaining video can get a message across.

If purposeful skill games aren't your style, blow off steam with something different. Of course, there's no crime in logging on and playing just for fun. Games that are simple to master, repetitive and challenge us in a variety of ways can be a stimulating way to pass an afternoon without completely turning out the world.
